Juglines (Part 1 of 3)
by: Jarred (a.k.a. westtxfisherman)

Alright, this will be a three-part series, first we will talk about jug fishing and the first steps to get the ideas of how it is done.  Of all the numerous ways to haul in big catches, or the big ones, is my favorite way -- "juggin". It has a very simple approach, they are inexpensive to make, and is a great way to get beginners or kids into the sport of fishing.

The main reason i like to go "juggin" is I am able to go set a few and then go and chase other species or do other things I need to do, and not have to attend to them constantly.  There are a couple of ways to set these jug lines, either anchored or free floating.  I prefer anchored since I won’t have such a high risk of getting hung up on debris. With free-floating jugs you are able to cover a lot more water. Making them is almost like looking for the fish, instead of the fish looking for the jugs. Either way is usually very productive.

The best strategy is to set out several jugs with several kinds of baits such as shad (my preference), perch minnows, or any other catfish bait you would like.  Now it is time to set your lines, I always set them at different depths or off points and channels. Once you maintain a spot where you are being productive bring in your non-productive jugs and you can have enough for a nice fish fry in a short time!

Next time we will discuss how to rig the jugs and a few tricks on jug fishing!!
